A Piece of Swiss Textile History – Handmade Since 1871
The story of Zimmerli of Switzerland dates back to 1871. The company was founded by Pauline Zimmerli, a pioneer of her time. Using one of the first knitting machines, she produced stockings and men’s socks, at a time when textile production was still almost entirely done by hand. From this small family business, an internationally active company quickly emerged.
To this day, craftsmanship remains at the heart of the brand and continues to shape it in a lasting way: Zimmerli stands for high-quality underwear, loungewear, and nightwear made from carefully selected natural fibers, with a consistent focus on finishing and unparalleled comfort.
A Look Behind the Scenes in Ticino
A visit to the production site in Mendrisio in Ticino reveals exactly what defines Zimmerli’s history: a manufacturing process that is quiet, focused, highly precise, and characterized by extensive handwork. Several teams work in different sections: men’s tops, men’s bottoms, and women’s garments. There is no rush; instead, a steady rhythm defines the workflow.
Even during the tour, it becomes clear how much is still done by hand. From cutting the fabric to creating the flat, perfectly aligned seams and attaching the final label - everything is crafted by hand.
The carefully selected fabrics, made from soft and exceptionally fine natural fibers, simply cannot be processed by machine. Seams must lie flat and must not cause friction, this requires a high degree of sensitivity and skill. Each seamstress, according to her qualifications, is responsible for a specific step in the production of a garment. Step by step, this process results in a finished product. After transport, the fabric panels are first left to rest for a full day in large basins.
This may sound unspectacular, but it is crucial to ensure that the natural fibers remain stable at a later stage and do not shrink. Cutting is carried out either by hand or using precise digital cutting technology—always with the goal of minimizing material waste.
Defined by routine and precision, the seamstresses carry out their work with great expertise. The training of the seamstresses also reflects the high standards of the clientele. It can take up to two years before a new employee fully masters the complexity of the craft.
Particularly impressive is the area where the iconic so-called “Richelieu Tank Top” is created - a product that has even achieved cult status in Hollywood. A small “Hall of Fame” in the production hall commemorates the film scenes in which the tank top appeared. Among the examples are Hollywood star Hugh Jackman in the film The Wolverine, as well as actress Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu from the popular Netflix series Emily in Paris.
Two brands, one sense of quality: Zimmerli × SWISS
The collaboration arose from a shared commitment to quality. SWISS was looking for products for SWISS First that were reusable and high-quality, while also being responsible. Zimmerli was a good fit not only because of its Swiss origins, but mainly because of its combination of craftsmanship and durability. The journey to get Zimmerli products on board SWISS is longer than one might think: For example, SWISS First guests were directly involved in the development of the joint concept from the very beginning. This meant that guest requirements in terms of materials, comfort, colors, and functions were considered in the design process and directly incorporated into the final products. It's an approach that ultimately makes a noticeable difference.
On board SWISS First, guests receive high-quality pajamas from Zimmerli. These are made from the finest certified organic cotton, and the tops are available in two versions: a long-sleeved version in midnight blue - like the pants - and a short-sleeved version, which comes in burgundy or chocolate brown and changes color every six months. The pajamas are available in sizes S to XL and are designed to be comfortable and stylish to wear at home. The set also includes slippers in improved quality, ensuring that guests have an all-round comfortable sleeping and wellness experience on board.
But it's not just the pajamas that come from Zimmerli; the Zimmerli × SWISS amenity kits, which were developed jointly, are designed to be practical not only during the flight, but also for everyday use. The kits come in four different designs and three colors, which change every three months: Bordeaux, black, and beige. Depending on the version, the kits come as a classic toiletries bag, a small shoulder bag, or even an iPad case. They are packed with essentials such as a dental care set and Sisley cosmetics, and guests can add to their kit with products from selected Swiss brands such as VIU, Rohner, Elmex, and Ricola.
