The carry-on baggage allowance for HON Circle Members, Senators, Frequent Travellers and passengers with Star Alliance Gold or Silver status is determined by the respective travel class (with the exception of the Economy Basic Fare on short- and medium-haul flights). Miles & More members with HON Circle or Senator status, as well as Star Alliance Gold status, are allowed to take one piece of carry-on baggage into the cabin free of charge, in addition to their personal item, when traveling on the Economy Basic fare on short- and medium-haul flights.
Your carry-on baggage must be stowed in the overhead locker or under the seat in front. Please therefore observe the maximum permitted size and weight for items of carry-on baggage.
Please note that the rules are applied consistently when boarding. Carry-on baggage that is too large, too heavy or exceeds the allowed amount will be removed at the gate and carried as checked baggage. A fee will also be charged. These charges are significantly higher at the gate and can only be paid by credit card. The fees depend on the route and range from EUR 60 / CHF 60 / USD 75 to EUR 110 / CHF 110 / USD 125.
A foldable garment bag with maximum dimensions of 57 x 54 x 15 cm can also be accepted as carry-on baggage.
You will find further information in the summary of charges for checked baggage.
Less carry-on baggage, more convenience
With less carry-on baggage you board the aircraft more quickly, enjoy more comfort on board and contribute to the punctuality of your flight. That is why we also check your carry-on baggage for quantity, size and weight at the security control and at the gate.
Please note that any piece of baggage brought to the gate counts as carry-on baggage. This applies regardless of your checked baggage allowance.
Any items that do not meet the regulations must be checked in. This may be subject to a charge depending on the fare. With very busy flights, we sometimes also ask you to check in carry-on baggage at the gate that conforms to the rules. Please always ensure that you take your personal electronic devices (e.g. e-cigarettes, power banks, laptops and smartphones etc.), valuables, passport and medication with you into the cabin.
Adults and children with their own seats may also take the following on board, in addition to the permitted carry-on baggage:
- Handbag, laptop bag or shoulder bag (max. 40 x 30 x 15 cm)*
- One pair of crutches, arm or leg splints, other types of medical prostheses
* Please note that the Economy Basic fare on short- and medium-haul flights does not include a carry-on bag, but only one personal item (40 x 30 x 15 cm), e.g. a laptop bag. You may also bring a child’s seat, one pair of crutches, or medical devices in the cabin in addition.
If smaller aircraft are fully booked, in exceptional cases we may have to check in hand baggage at the gate. This will be for your safety and comfort.
Countries such as the USA, for example, have stricter rules regarding hand baggage. In these countries, passengers in First and Business Class with a second item of hand baggage must check the item in.
