Travelling with children – General information
Being on board an aircraft is generally an exciting adventure for children. If your little ones are well-prepared beforehand, you as parents can also travel free from stress. Special regulations apply to children travelling alone.
Reserve your seats in advance
If you and your family would all like to sit together, you have the option of reserving your preferred seats for your family. You can find additional information on advance seat reservations here.
Tickets and seats for children
Your child will require a valid ticket, but will not need to have their own seat. The ticket will cost about 10% of the standard price. During the flight, the infant will sit on an adult's lap, secured by a special seatbelt. Newborns less than a week old require a doctor's certificate stating that they are fit to fly.
If an infant turns 2 between the outbound and inbound journey of a ticket, a seat must be issued for the entire journey. The infant discount will no longer apply and a child fare will be charged for all segments.
Immigration regulations for children
Lots of countries, such as South Africa, have special immigration regulations for children. Make sure that you have all the required documents ready before your trip.
When not to fly
A healthy child can fly without any risk to health. However, if you are uncertain, contact your paediatrician. We do advise against flying if your child has a bad cold, a high temperature or has recently had surgery. Parents are required to change their flight arrangements if their child has an infectious childhood disease such as chicken pox or rubella. Additional charges may be incurred.
If a child has a congenital disease that has not yet been diagnosed, some symptoms may only become evident during a flight. These diseases include serious anaemia, heart defects and deformations of the lungs.
Food for babies and children
We serve special baby food to order on all our flights and in all travel classes. Of course, special children's menus can also be provided on request. On European flights, this service is only available in Business Class. Babies' and children's menus can be ordered up to 24 hours in advance from the Service Centre.
