Options for CO2 savings in air travel
SWISS offers you various options to contribute to reducing the climate impact of future flights. This is achieved through the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and the support of high-quality climate protection projects in line with your estimated flight-related CO2 emissions.
Three reasons for the options we offer
- Contribution to reducing the climate impact of future flights
- To support the transition to more sustainable air travel
- To provide additional services depending on your chosen offer (such as flexible rebooking options)
Our offers to reduce the climate impact of future flights
Make a contribution to achieving CO2 savings for future flights. You can do so at various points during your journey: During the booking process, on board, or after your flight. The offers include a combination of SAF and investments in climate protection projects.
Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) are produced not from fossil materials, but from renewable energy sources, such as used cooking oils and fats or agricultural waste. While SAF emits a similar amount of CO2 emissions during combustion as conventional kerosene, its greenhouse gas emissions across the entire lifecycle are at least 80% lower. To support CO2 savings, we calculate the required amount of SAF based on estimated flight-related CO2 emissions and ensure that this corresponding volume is used on future Lufthansa Group flights.
The SAF used in Lufthansa Group customer offers is purchased in addition to the current regulatory SAF blending mandates in the EU and Switzerland of 2%, which are already included in the ticket price, and is integrated into the Lufthansa Group’s flight operations within six months after the respective flight.
The raw materials used to produce SAF do not compete with food or animal feed production and are subject to strict sustainability criteria defined in the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) and the RefuelEu Aviation Regulation, which are verified by independent auditors.
The Lufthansa Group promotes climate protection projects worldwide in collaboration with the providers myclimate, Climate Partners, SQUAKE and climate Austria. Climate protection projects include the restoration of peatlands in Germany, the use of energy-saving cookers in African countries or technical solutions such as the storage of CO2 in concrete or pyrolytically produced fertilizer, so-called biochar. All projects ensure that, over the long term, either CO2 emissions are avoided or removed from the atmosphere. Environmental projects outside of Europe are certified to the highest international standards: “Gold Standard” or “Plan Vivo”. Furthermore, the effects and quality of local, European environmental projects are ensured by the domestic standards, such as “MoorFutures”, or the CH VER guidelines.
With your contribution, not only do you help with climate protection, but you also contribute to more biodiversity and improved living conditions for local people.
Make a difference now
Whether it’s before, during, or after you travel, explore the options to contribute to reducing the climate impact of future flights, based on your estimated individual CO2 emissions.
When booking your flight
You can choose from a range of options when you book on swiss.com:
Green fares
When booking most flights, the Green fare option automatically includes a contribution to saving future CO2 emissions.
The fare is made up of a fixed combination of Sustainable Aviation Fuels and a contribution to high-quality climate protection projects.
Bookings without a Green fare
You can choose from various packages, including a different amount of SAF and climate protection projects contribution, just before the final step in the booking process.
After booking your flight
Even after booking your flight, you can still choose from several options to contribute to more sustainable travel.
The SAF used by the Lufthansa Group is manufactured exclusively using original materials that comply with the strict sustainability criteria of the European Renewable Energy Directive 1018/2001/EU Article 20 (RED II). The SAF used is certified according to the ISCC or RSB criteria and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% compared to kerosene using fossil origin materials. The sustainable component of the original materials is produced in a sustainable and ethical manner using good agricultural and industrial practices that comply with all applicable labour rights and laws as well as all environmental regulations, including but not limited to ILO Convention No. 138, ILO Convention No. 182 and ILO Convention No. 105.
On board
With the option for more sustainable flying, you can contribute directly on board our long-haul flights to reducing the climate impacts of your future flights by supporting the use of SAF and climate protection projects. You can do so by using your device to log into SWISS Connect, our internet access on board, free of charge.
After the flight
Already reached your destination? You can still choose from several options for contributing to future CO2 emissions savings.
Redeem miles
Miles & More customers can use award miles via the mindfulflyer programme in the Miles & More app to support climate effective options aligned with their estimated flight-related CO2 footprint.
