Excess baggage
Not enough room in your suitcase? It happens. We will carry any overweight, oversized, or additional baggage for you for an additional fee charged per leg.
Excess baggage
The permitted dimensions and weight of your baggage are precisely defined so you can carry it with you as checked baggage. Your bag is classified as excess baggage if it exceeds the permitted weight and/or dimensions. You will incur an additional charge if it does. Please refer to the tables below for the exact prices. The price depends on your travel class: SWISS Economy, SWISS Business and SWISS First.
Fees
The excess baggage fee is charged for each leg. Connecting flights within 24 hours count as one leg. Outbound and return flights must be paid for separately in the local currency of the departure airport.
The amounts in the table are for reference purposes: CHF for Switzerland, EUR for all European countries except Switzerland, USD for all countries outside Europe and CAD for Canada. Currency conversions may result in a difference in price.

Carrying baggage as freight
Any bags weighing more than 32 kg are no longer processed at the desk, but have to be checked in separately as freight. It makes sense financially to send larger quantities of excess baggage by Swiss WorldCargo. However, freight items are not necessarily carried on the same aircraft as their owners.
Important: private individuals are not permitted to send freight from the USA. Please contact a local freight forwarder to assist you.
- Dimensions = length + width + height of the bag
Additional baggage
You will incur a fee if you wish to check in any additional baggage. The fee for this additional baggage varies depending on the size, weight and destination. The maximum weight for an additional bag is determined by the travel compartment.
Baggage fees outside your baggage allowance
The fee is per direction and bag. A supplement of EUR/USD/CHF 5 is charged per bag if you book via our Service Centre.

1Please note that the fee is calculated in the national currency of the relevant departure airport.
If you are travelling in Economy, Premium Economy, Business or First Class, you have the option of adding additional baggage to your booking for a fee at the Swiss Service desk at the airport or by telephone via the Service Centre, or you can do so easily yourself online under “My bookings”.
This also applies to additional baggage that exceeds the permitted weight and dimensions for the various travel classes.
On the Economy Class Basic fare on short- and medium-haul flights as well as on the Light fare you have the option of adding a bag weighing up to 23 kg per leg for a fee. The outbound and return flights each make up a single leg and can also include a connecting flight. Baggage costs cannot be refunded or used as credit after payment.
On flights on the Economy Basic fare on short- and medium-haul flights and on the Economy Light fare between Europe and USA / Canada you can add a second bag to your booking for a fee at the Swiss Service desk at the airport or by telephone via the Service Centre, or you can do so easily yourself online under “My bookings”.
If you wish to check in an oversized, overweight bag or additional baggage, the flat-rate fees apply per additional bag on the Economy Basic fare on short- and medium-haul flights and on the Economy Light fare.
On the Economy Basic fare on short- and medium-haul flights as well as on the Light fare it is not possible to take sports baggage (ski or snowboarding equipment etc.) free of charge as additional baggage or in addition to your booked baggage.

The fees for additional baggage apply per leg.
Note: bags weighing more than 32 kg or longer than 315 cm are not accepted as baggage and can be sent as freight.
Discounted fees
On some intercontinental routes SWISS Economy gives you the added benefit of discounted fees on a second item of baggage (23 kg, dimensions 158 cm). You can take advantage of this offer at check-in or directly online at a particularly favourable price at the time of booking. You can also add baggage later through your profile.
The discounted fees only apply to the 2nd item of baggage. Miles & More members with Frequent Traveller status and above, as well as STAR Gold members, enjoy an increased baggage allowance on all flights. In this case the discounted fee no longer applies and the normal SWISS excess baggage rules apply to any additional baggage.
