What is a debit card?
Debit cards are linked to an account and generally only in conjunction with an existing current account with a bank. The debit card number consists of 13 to 19 digits and is printed on the front of the card along with the expiry date. The three-digit security number can usually be found on the back of the card in or close to the signature field.
Note: Bank cards or EC cards with the V-Pay or Maestro logo are often also described as debit cards. You can use these cards to withdraw cash from cash machines and pay in shops anywhere in the world by entering your PIN or with your signature. But not all these cards have an online payment feature. The bank that issued your card can assist with information about this.
Unlike credit cards, with cashless payment by debit card, the equivalent amount is charged to the current account linked to the card within a few days. That’s why payments can only be made if you have sufficient funds in your account. With credit cards on the other hand, the amount is only charged at specific intervals, generally once a month.
