Walking through the history of Gdansk
In most European cities you find all the historical buildings in the Old Town, but in Gdansk the historic part is the Rechtstadt („City to the right“). Once there was even a city wall between the Old Town, where workers and artisans where living, and the Rechtstadt, where the rich merchants had their beautiful houses. During its roughly one thousand years of history Gdansk was a member of the Hanseatic League, belonged to Poland, Prussia, Lithuania and Germany and was also an autonomous city for some time. Like many other Polish cities, Gdansk has a historical Royal Route that a visiting King rode down in a festive procession. Following that way brings you to the most impressive sights of Gdansk. Starting at the High Gate, you will arrive on the Long Lane, the most impressive street with highly decorated houses of the rich merchants. Coming through the Golden Gate, you enter the Long Market, the centre of commerce and politics for many centuries. The splendid Old Town Hall has to compete with the Artus Court where the merchant guild convened. The famous Neptune's Fountain is right in front of the court. The whole market is lined with many narrow merchant homes that remind visitors of Brussels or Amsterdam. If you climb the tower of the Town Hall, you get a great view over Gdansk. Even better is the view from the towers of St. Mary’s, said to be the biggest brick church in the world. The Green Gate on the other End of the Long Market looks more like a small palace. It was supposed to house the King when he was in town. Today it houses the National Museum. If you walk through the gate, you reach the Green Bridge over the River Mot?awa. The most famous sight of Gdansk, the Crane Gate, is on the banks of the river.
Sun, fun and the beach
If you are looking for a relaxed day after so much history and architecture, you can just hop on a streetcar and visit one of the beautiful beaches in the direct vicinity of Gdansk. In the 19th century, the upper class of Gdansk made Brze?no their favourite beach town and started building their beachfront houses all along the beach. Jelitkowo and Sopot in the northwest are also connected to the streetcar network. Sopot is a lively beach town and the centre of the Gdansk nightlife. Before you jump headfirst into a wild party night, get some samples of the local food. Try the Polish national dish Bigos, a stew from cabbage, mushrooms, pork and bacon, for restoring your energy. Gdansk is also well known for its fresh fish, try a zander filet with cabbage and bacon or a carp with almonds and raisins. Have fun in Gdansk.
