Flying from Zurich to Porto: tips and information for your trip
In the time it takes to eat lunch in a southern European country, SWISS or one of its partner airlines could fly you from Zurich to Porto, city of Port wine and stately bridges on the northwest coast of Portugal.
From strolling the narrow, cobbled streets of the medieval Ribeira past merchants’ houses and cafes to wondering at the lavish baroque interior and ornate gilded carvings in the São Francisco Church or taking a sunset cruise on the beautiful Douro River, time will stand still for you while you soak up the charm of this city.
Porto is a city brimming with sights and experiences. The Clérigos Tower is Porto’s most iconic landmark and the city’s most important Baroque building. Climb its 240 steps for a breath-taking view from the top. Then hit the streets to discover unusual attractions, such as the Livraria Lello, said to be one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores. More than a century old, Lello is an art nouveau treasure with gothic details, stained-glass and a grand red staircase.
Or visit the São Bento train station, voted one of the world’s most beautiful railway stations. The exterior has a Belle Epoque look, while the interior walls are covered with 20,000 decorative tiles that portray scenes of Portuguese history, daily life and transportation. For lunch, treat yourself to a Francesinha (“Frenchy”), a huge open sandwich made with linguiça (garlicky smoked pork sausage), roast meat and ham, topped with cheese and a fried egg and drenched in rich beer sauce.
Save some energy to visit Foz, a mini-city within Porto that was a seaside resort for Brits and wealthy Porto residents in the nineteenth century. For some fresh air, head over to the Crystal Palace gardens with its eight hectares of lush greenery and astonishing views over the river. Then stop off for tapas and coffee in the Ribeira, the old city district that is also a Unesco World Heritage Site. And what would a trip to Porto be without visiting the Porto wine cellars for a guided tour and a Port tasting.
