Venice was a merchant republic during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, but started as a refugee camp in the swampy lagoon, where the early Venetians fled from Germanic tribes in the early Middle Ages. They learned how to build their city on thousands of wooden stakes and how to link the little islands by bridges and canals to form a city in the lagoon. The citizens concentrated on trade by ship on the Adriatic and Mediterranean Sea and became the richest city on earth in early Renaissance times. Venice grew into an empire throughout the eastern Mediterranean.
Venice linked Western Europe to trading goods from as far away as India and China, with spices and silk as the most valued imports. The ruling members of the city council were avid builders of fine private and public buildings and supported the arts. The famous San Marco Cathedral is dedicated to the Patron Saint of Venice, the evangelist Marc, whose body was smuggled from Alexandria in Egypt to Venice in 828 A.D.
The famous bronze lions that adorn the building were taken from Constantinople during the fourth crusade in the 13th century. The Piazza San Marco is a great start for a walk along the fabled canals like the Canale Grande or a boat trip in a gondola, the long black boats that were invented especially for the narrow waterways of Venice. Going under the Rialto Bridge in a gondola is the ultimate romantic cliché for Venice.
The Doge’s Palace, which saw 120 consecutive rulers of Venice from 697 until Napoleon conquered the city 1797, is a must-see landmark in Venice. The Arsenal was the first assembly line in history, where highly skilled shipwrights were able to build 100 ships in two weeks.
