One of the most important experiences for every visitor to Lisbon is an evening with fado. This traditional music is performed by a male or female singer accompanied by a Portuguese guitar, a pretty pear-shaped instrument with a cheerful tone that perfectly matches the dramatic and impassioned style of the songs. Many of the singers enjoy a cult status.
Fado can be heard in many restaurants in the city center. Portuguese cuisine is more Atlantic than Mediterranean. Bacalhao (salt cod) often appears on restaurant menus and goes perfectly with the sharp vinho verde (green wine). Another delicious speciality is the pastel de nata – a small custard tart.
