A lifestyle product is conquering the beverage market: microdrinks. But what exactly is it? Where does the trend come from? And what are the advantages of these thirst quenchers? Answers to the most important questions.

What is meant by microdrinks? Microdrinks are compactly pressed small cubes with, for example, fruit extracts, plant extracts and vitamins. They are sugar-free and can be added to tap or mineral water, where they dissolve completely and give the water an aroma. There are different varieties to choose from.

Who invented it?

The Austrian scale-up waterdrop® is considered a pioneer in the field of microdrinks. It launched the first dice in 2017 and became widely known a year later in the TV show "Höhle der Löwen". The products are now sold in over 40 countries. In 2023, waterdrop® conquered the tennis world and became the official hydration partner of the ATP Tour. As part of the collaboration, Novak Djokovic invested in the brand. In the same year, the microdrink manufacturer attracted Ricola's attention. Because the two companies share many values in terms of quality, Ricola decided to invest in the young company and enter into a partnership. This bears fruit in the Ricola Drink Cubes, which have been available in France and Austria since last year and also in Switzerland since this year.

What are the benefits of microdrinks?

Hydration variety

Humans must consume enough water to be functional and efficient. Without enough water, communication between neurons in the brain is impaired. That means it's harder to think. The skin is also "thirsty". It stores around 30 percent of all body water and ensures that our body is cooled by sweating. All reasons to drink enough. Every now and then, however, many people want a change in taste from pure tap or mineral water. Microdrinks are practical: Simply add a cube to the water and there is variety thanks to various refreshing flavors. And you can dilute as you like best.

A lot of drink in a small space

A pack of Ricola Drink Cubes, for example, weighs only 26 grams and is just 9 x 9 centimetres in size. So it has room even in the smallest corner of the closet or in the handbag. It contains 12 cubes that produce between 4 and 6 deciliters of flavored water per piece, depending on the preferred concentration. The bottom line is about 6 liters of drink per pack. That's quite a lot for something that takes up very little space. The only other thing you need is access to drinking water.

Practical for on the go

Many people today always have a water bottle with them when they are out and about anyway. If you feel like a drink with flavor, microdrinks are an uncomplicated, quick and compact solution. Because the cubes are free of preservatives and should not get damp before use, they are individually and stably packed in so-called pods. So you can simply put them in your pocket if necessary to have a cube at hand when needed. A good solution also in the mobile office or during sports.

Try Ricola Drink Cubes

The Ricola Drink Cubes can now also be tasted in the SWISS Lounges in Zurich and Geneva.

In the Ricola Drink Cubes, the flavours lemon, raspberry, pomegranate and verbena provide a refreshing taste experience – combined with alpine herbs from Swiss farmers. These are grown in accordance with Bio Suisse standards and dried and processed in Switzerland.

The added vitamins of the B and C complexes contribute, among other things, to the normal function of the immune and nervous systems and support normal energy metabolism. The Drink Cubes are sweetened with steviol glycosides from stevia leaves - and are therefore completely sugar-free.

In short, microdrinks meet current consumer needs – a strong foundation for a success story.
