“I’m still living my childhood dream”

On 15 May 2026, the time has finally come: the long-awaited 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship on home ice begins. As an Official Sponsor of the event and the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation, SWISS is right in the middle of the action alongside fans and players and is looking forward to a time full of dreams, emotions, and unforgettable moments. National team player Nino Niederreiter is also looking forward to returning home and representing Switzerland at an Ice Hockey World Championship on home soil.

The Swiss national ice hockey team and SWISS have a lot in common: both represent Switzerland and its people. Both proudly wear the Swiss cross. Both carry the spirit of home far beyond national borders, creating a sense of community around the world. Dreams become shared goals, and home becomes a driving force. In this interview, Nino Niederreiter, NHL player and member of the Swiss national team, talks with us about childhood dreams, the quiet moments of flying, and what home means to him.

Looking back at your eight-year-old self: did you ever dream of playing at an Ice Hockey World Championship in your home country?
Back then, I never would have imagined getting the chance to experience another Ice Hockey World Championship on home ice. Especially after the cancellation of the 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, it felt a little like a dream that had been shattered. When I found out there would be another opportunity, I really hoped I could be part of it again.

Did you dream of a big ice hockey career when you were a little boy?
Yes, I dreamed of an ice hockey career from a very young age. I always knew that I wanted to pursue that dream for as long as possible. Today, I’m still living that dream and trying to enjoy every moment and every game.

Do you remember your first flight?
Yes, very clearly. We were at home with the family, looking at holiday deals on Teletext. Then my parents and cousins found a last-minute offer, and shortly afterward we drove straight to the airport and flew to the Caribbean. I was still very young and had to sit by myself in a different row on the plane, which was definitely a special experience.

What do you enjoy most about flying?
The peace and quiet. You’re somehow cut off from everything; you can’t just go anywhere, and you have time for yourself. I fly a lot during the season, so for me it’s also a great way to switch off and slow down a little.

What do you always bring with you when you travel?
I always carry my iPad and headphones with me. I really enjoy watching series and TV shows, and I use the time on the plane for that.

What is your favorite travel destination, and what makes it so special?
I can’t narrow it down to just one. I especially like Portugal, particularly the area around Lisbon. In general, I love traveling and still want to discover many more places around the world.

The first day back in Switzerland after a season abroad: what’s at the top of your to-do list?
Spending time with family, my girlfriend, and friends. Seeing people I haven’t seen in a long time during the season, giving them a hug, and simply enjoying time together is something I really look forward to.

What are you most looking forward to when you return to North America after a summer in Switzerland?
I’m a big fan of North America, not just because of hockey, but also because of the people and the country. Canada has become my second home. I’ve built many friendships there, even outside of hockey, and I’ve had the chance to get to know many different cultures and mindsets. That has been very enriching for me.

Is there anything about you that would surprise fans?
Maybe that I actually don’t really like being the center of attention and prefer to stay more in the background. Of course, that comes with the job, but privately I’m a bit more low-key.

Thank you, Nino Niederreiter, for the interview and best of luck to you and the Swiss national team at the 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship on home ice.
