Lucerne Festival: Orchestrating the Moment

World-famous orchestras, legendary conductors, acclaimed soloists: every year, Lucerne Festival brings the finest of the finest to the idyllic shores of Lake Lucerne. Together with around 100,000 international visitors, they celebrate music at the very highest level. At the heart of it all stands the Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre (KKL Luzern), designed by Jean Nouvel. Its Concert Hall is famed worldwide for both its extraordinary acoustics and striking architecture.

Lucerne Festival unfolds across four moments throughout the year. The highlight of the season is the nearly five-week Summer Festival, presenting more than 100 events in August and September: from intimate solo recitals and major symphony concerts to experimental formats and open-air performances across the city. Complementing the Summer Festival are three smaller editions: the Spring Festival before Easter, the Pulse Festival in May curated by the pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, and Lucerne Festival Forward in November with Jörg Widmann and the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra.

A Great Tradition

For more than 85 years, Lucerne Festival has been shaping the international classical music scene. Founded in 1938 as an alternative to the Salzburg Festival, the Festival was born out of artistic conviction and cultural openness. Arturo Toscanini, then the world’s most celebrated conductor, cancelled his Salzburg appearance in protest and instead came to Lucerne, where an elite orchestra of handpicked soloists and outstanding musicians was assembled especially for him.

Orchestrating the Moment

The most magical concert experiences are those in which time seems to stand stillwhen music, space, and people merge into a single unforgettable moment. Lucerne Festival creates moments like these: in the KKL, one of the world’s leading concert halls, with musical legends and exceptional young talents, through both beloved masterpieces and bold contemporary sounds. All set against the spectacular backdrop of lake and mountains, Lucerne’s historic old town, and the iconic concert hall.

Summertime! Summer Festival 2026

With “American Dreams” as its theme, the 2026 Summer Festival explores the many musical visions and soundscapes of the United States: from George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein to Steve Reich and Frank Zappa. Once again, the world’s leading artists will gather in Lucerne, including Anne-Sophie Mutter, celebrating her 50th anniversary on the Lucerne stage, alongside numerous guests from the “New World.”

Lucerne Festival is also the orchestra festival par excellence. Nowhere else can audiences experience and compare so many of the world’s great orchestras in such close succession. Regular guests include the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the “big five” American orchestras, and many more, all performing with celebrated conductors and virtuoso soloists.
